What is the Difference Between Positional Trading and Swing Trading?
In trading, the difference between positional and swing trading comes down to a single factor: time horizon. Think of it like being on the water. A swing trader catches a quick, punchy wave on a surfboard and hops off once it breaks. A positional trader, however, boards a cruise ship to cross the ocean, completely ignoring the choppy waters of each day.
In the stock market, swing traders hold stocks for just days or weeks to profit from short-term price momentum. Positional traders hold for months or years, riding out major, long-term trends. For everyday investors, this distinction is crucial. It dictates your routine. Swing trading demands active, daily market monitoring and technical analysis, whereas positional trading relies on patience and trusting the company’s long-term fundamentals.
