What’s Happening Beyond Markets?

  • The new UPI framework keeps all person-to-person and 96% of merchant transactions completely free. A nominal 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate will only apply to merchant payments exceeding ₹2,000, ensuring individuals and small businesses remain unaffected.
  • India’s cumulative exports for April-August 2026-27 reached an estimated US$ 399.27 billion, marking a 15.55% growth. August 2026 alone recorded exports worth US$ 82.68 billion, driven significantly by surges in electronic goods and petroleum products.
  • India’s current account deficit widened to USD 7 billion in the month of July. Despite this expanding deficit, steady capital flows have successfully helped cushion the country’s overall external balance during this period.
  • The Union Cabinet approved enhancing the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. This move expands mandatory provident fund, pension, and insurance coverage to over 51 lakh additional employees, strengthening formal worker retirement security.

What is the Difference Between NSC and PPF?

Both the Public Provident Fund (PPF) and National Savings Certificate (NSC) are safe, government-backed tax-saving investments, but they run on completely different timelines. Think of PPF as a financial marathon and NSC as a shorter sprint. PPF is a 15-year commitment where you make flexible yearly deposits to slowly build a tax-free retirement fund. NSC is typically a one-time lump-sum investment that locks your money away for just 5 years.

While both save you taxes, PPF’s final returns are completely tax-free, whereas NSC’s maturity payout is taxable. For everyday investors, this distinction is crucial. If you are building a long-term wealth cushion, PPF is the clear winner. If you need to safely park a one-time bonus for a medium-term goal, go with NSC.
