What are the Different Types of Institutional Investors in India?

In the stock market, institutional investors are the “whales” that pool large sums of money to invest heavily in securities. Think of the market like a wholesale bazaar. Everyday investors are individuals buying a single basket of apples. Institutional investors are giant supermarket chains buying entire truckloads, which ultimately influences the price of apples for everyone else.

In India, these giants fall into two main groups. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) include local mutual funds, banks, and insurance giants. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) are global funds investing in the Indian market. For everyday investors, tracking these players is crucial. Because they buy and sell in such massive volumes, their money actively moves markets. Monitoring where DIIs and FIIs put their cash reveals strong underlying market trends.
