Terms that put you one step ahead – every day

What is the Difference Between QIP, IPO, and Rights Issue?

Think of raising capital like funding a bakery. How a company gets the cash defines the term. An IPO (Initial Public Offering) is the grand opening. A private company sells shares to the general public for the very first time. A Rights Issue is the loyalty program. To expand, a listed company offers new shares, usually at a discount, exclusively to its existing shareholders.

A QIP (Qualified Institutional Placement) is the VIP bulk-order. To raise cash quickly, the company bypasses retail investors and sells shares only to large financial institutions, like mutual funds. For everyday investors, IPOs and Rights Issues are direct opportunities to buy in. A QIP leaves you out of the transaction, but it serves as a strong signal that “smart money” believes in the company’s future.
