What is the Face Value of Stocks?
In the stock market, face value (or par value) is the original, nominal price of a single share, decided by a company when it first issues stock. Think of it like a rare vintage comic book. The cover might proudly state it costs ₹500 (its face value), but today, collectors trade it for thousands of rupees (its market value).
You’ll usually see face values set very low, such as ₹1 or ₹10. For everyday investors, this term matters most during corporate actions. If a company announces a “100% dividend,” it means 100% of that original face value, not the current trading price. The main takeaway? Never confuse face value with market value. A stock’s true worth is simply what investors are willing to pay for it today.
