What is the Difference Between Sharpe Ratio and Sortino Ratio?

Both ratios measure whether an investment’s returns are actually worth the risk you took. Think of reviewing a rollercoaster. The Sharpe Ratio measures every single jolt, both the thrilling upward climbs and the scary drops. The Sortino Ratio, however, only cares about the terrifying drops.

In the stock market, the Sharpe Ratio penalises an investment for all volatility. This means a stock that suddenly shoots up is technically punished for being “risky.” The Sortino Ratio fixes this by only looking at downside volatility, the actual risk of your investment losing money. For everyday investors, this distinction is crucial. If a stock frequently surges upward, the Sortino Ratio gives you a much better picture of true downside risk, without unfairly punishing the investment for positive, wealth-building growth.
