What is Behavioural Finance?
Behavioural finance studies how human psychology and emotions influence financial decisions, challenging the traditional theory that investors always act rationally. Think of it like grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Logically, you know you only need bread and milk. But your hunger (an emotion) drives you to impulsively buy five bags of chips.
In the stock market, human nature often overrides logic. This concept explains why markets don’t always make sense. It’s the driving force behind people panicking and selling their shares during a minor dip, or buying into a heavily overpriced stock just because of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). For everyday investors, understanding this is crucial. By recognising your own emotional biases—like the fear of losing or the urge to follow the crowd—you can stick to your long-term strategy and avoid costly mistakes.
