Here’s a quick wrap-up where we break down the performance of key indices, top corporate movers, and the major economic headlines of the day.

Extending their losing streak for the fifth consecutive session, Indian benchmark indices opened in the red on Friday, July 24, plunging by around 1.10%. The sell-off was primarily fueled by surging Brent crude prices, which hit over $100 a barrel amid escalating US-Iran tensions and Houthi attacks on Saudi tankers, combined with a Wall Street tech rout triggered by heavy AI spending and disappointing tech results.

Furthermore, investor sentiment was dragged down by fresh 10% US tariffs under Section 301 in many countries including India; a spike in US 10-year bond yields to 4.711%, driving foreign fund outflows; and weak Q1 domestic earnings from key players like Infosys and InterGlobe Aviation. However, the market staged a late-session recovery, allowing Nifty 50 and Sensex to pare most of their losses and end 0.43% lower.

What’s Happening Beyond Markets?

  • According to the HSBC Flash India PMI, the Composite Output Index dropped to 54.3 in July 2026 from June’s 57.1. Marking the slowest private sector expansion since March 2022, this moderation was driven by escalating inflationary pressures and slower service-sector growth.
  • India’s crude steel production grew 3% to 42.1 million tonnes in Q1 FY2026-27. Furthermore, finished steel consumption rose 8.3% to 41.6 million tonnes. However, India still remained a net importer of finished steel during this period.
  • As per PIB, scientists at SASTRA University have developed a new “nanofluid electrolyte” for electrically rechargeable Zinc-air batteries. This low-cost, patented innovation suppresses zinc corrosion and enhances oxygen reactions, offering a safer and greener solution for next-generation energy storage.
  • SEBI has proposed a new mutual fund-only framework for Portfolio Management Services (PMS). This regulatory initiative aims to significantly expand investment options for investors while simultaneously easing compliance requirements for portfolio managers.

What are Stock Market Scams?

Stock market scams are deceptive schemes designed to trick investors out of their money through manipulation or false information. Think of it like buying a used car. A scam is when a shady seller rolls back the odometer and hides major engine flaws just to sell you a lemon at a premium price.

In the stock market, these often appear as “Pump and Dump” schemes. Fraudsters hype up a cheap, unknown stock with fake news, sell their own shares at the peak, and leave new buyers holding the bag as the price crashes. For everyday investors, scepticism is your best defence.
