What is FATCA in India?

FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) is a U.S. law designed to catch tax evaders holding money in foreign bank accounts and assets. Think of it like an international tax surveillance system. Under an agreement with the U.S., Indian financial institutions, like banks and mutual fund houses, must report the financial details of any U.S. citizens, green card holders, or tax residents living in India.

In the stock market, you’ll encounter FATCA compliance whenever you open a demat or mutual fund account. You’ll be asked to declare your tax residency via a simple self-declaration form. For everyday investors, FATCA is simply a mandatory compliance step. If you’re an Indian tax resident, it’s just routine paperwork. But if you have U.S. tax links, full disclosure is non-negotiable to avoid locked accounts or heavy penalties.
