What is ESG Investing?
ESG investing means buying shares in companies based on how they treat the planet, their people, and their governance structure. Think of it like buying groceries. You might pick one brand over another not just for taste, but because it uses eco-friendly packaging and treats its farmers fairly.
In the stock market, E stands for Environmental (carbon footprint), S for Social (employee welfare and diversity), and G for Governance (ethical leadership and transparent accounting). For everyday investors, ESG helps identify sustainable, forward-looking companies. While it lowers exposure to long-term risks like environmental lawsuits or corporate scandals, a high ESG score doesn’t automatically guarantee strong stock returns.
