Extending their losing streak, Nifty 50 and Sensex ended approximately 1% lower after a volatile trading session on Thursday, April 23. What are Operating Expenses?

In business, operating expenses (OPEX) are the everyday costs a company must pay to run its core operations and generate revenue. So, if you run a bakery, your operating expenses are the essential costs of keeping the doors open: paying rent, salaries, the electricity bill, etc.

In the stock market, you’ll see these deducted from a company’s gross profit on its income statement. Common examples include rent, employee salaries, utilities, and marketing. For everyday investors, these expenses reveal how efficiently a company is managed. If a company’s operating costs consistently rise faster than its sales, profit margins will shrink. This creeping inefficiency is often a major red flag for the stock’s long-term health.
