Nifty 50 and Sensex extended their losing streak for the third consecutive session, ending over 1% lower on Friday, April 24. What is a Liquidity Trap?

In economics, a liquidity trap happens when interest rates are extremely low, yet people and businesses hoard cash instead of spending or investing it. Think of it like a massive clearance sale at a store. Even if prices (interest rates) hit rock bottom, customers are so worried about their future finances that they refuse to buy anything, preferring to keep their money safely in their wallets.

In the broader economy, this usually occurs during severe downturns. Central banks try to stimulate growth by making borrowing cheap, but the fear of instability overrides the incentive to invest. For everyday investors, a liquidity trap signals a stagnant economy. Traditional monetary policies stop working, often leading to prolonged periods of flat stock market growth until consumer and business confidence is finally restored.
