What is an Annual General Meeting (AGM)?
In the corporate world, an Annual General Meeting (AGM) is a mandatory yearly gathering of a company’s executives, directors, and shareholders. Think of it like a town hall meeting for your city. The mayor (the CEO) updates everyone on what was accomplished, what it cost, and the plans for next year. Then, the residents (the shareholders) get to ask questions and vote on important issues, like electing the city council (the board of directors).
At an AGM, companies review their past financial performance, discuss future strategies, and vote on things like dividend payouts or auditor appointments. For everyday investors, the AGM is your primary opportunity to have a voice. Even if you only own a few shares, you have the right to vote on these major company decisions, either by attending or voting remotely by “proxy.”
