What is the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR)?

In banking, the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) is the minimum percentage of total deposits a bank must keep securely stashed with the central bank. Think of it like a personal emergency fund. If you earn ₹1,000, you might lock ₹50 in a safe you can’t touch for daily spending. Banks are required to do the same thing with our deposits to ensure they never run dry.

In the broader economy, central banks adjust the CRR to directly control the money supply. When the central bank lowers the CRR, banks suddenly have more money to lend. This easily available credit helps businesses borrow and expand, often driving up corporate profits.
