What is Risk Management?
In investing, risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling potential losses in your portfolio. Think of it like driving a car. You can’t control the weather or other drivers on the road, but you wear a seatbelt and carry insurance. You don’t stop driving entirely; you just protect yourself from severe accidents.
In the stock market, risk management involves using specific strategies to safeguard your money. Common examples include diversifying your investments across different industries, setting stop-loss orders, or balancing volatile stocks with stable bonds. For everyday investors, this practice is essential. It’s not about avoiding risk altogether, because taking some risk is how you earn returns. Instead, it ensures that one bad investment doesn’t wipe out your account, keeping you safely in the market long-term.
