What is an Upstream?
In business, “upstream” refers to the very first stages of a supply chain or production process, usually involving the sourcing or extraction of raw materials. Think of it like making a pizza. The upstream process is the farmer growing the tomatoes and harvesting the wheat. The downstream process is the pizzeria actually baking the pie and delivering it to your door.
In the stock market, you’ll hear this most often in the energy sector. Upstream companies are the ones actively exploring, drilling, and pulling oil and gas from the ground. For everyday investors, knowing where a company sits in the stream helps gauge risk. Upstream stocks are heavily impacted by raw material prices, meaning they often offer higher potential rewards but come with bigger, more unpredictable price swings.
