What is the Difference Between an Interim Dividend and a Final Dividend?

An interim dividend is a payout given to shareholders during the financial year, whereas a final dividend is paid after the year closes and total profits are tallied. Think of it like receiving a bonus at work. An interim dividend is a smaller, mid-year bonus your boss hands out because business has been great lately. The final dividend is the official end-of-year bonus awarded once all the annual numbers are officially calculated.

In the market, company boards announce interim dividends based on quarterly or half-yearly profits. However, final dividends require official shareholder approval at the annual general meeting. For everyday investors, this means you don’t have to wait all year for a payout. Interim dividends provide steady cash flow, while the final dividend acts as the wrap-up reward for holding the stock.
