What is the Impact of FOMO and YOLO in Investing?

In investing, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and YOLO (You Only Live Once) are emotional traps that push people to make reckless financial decisions. Think of it like buying an absurdly overpriced concert ticket just because your friends are going (FOMO), or spending your entire paycheck on a product or experience (YOLO).

In the stock market, FOMO drives investors to buy a surging “meme stock” at its absolute peak, terrified of missing the rally. YOLO investing involves throwing your portfolio into a highly risky, unproven asset without doing any research, hoping for overnight millions. For everyday investors, recognising these mindset traps is crucial. They almost always lead to buying high and panic-selling low. A successful portfolio is built on patient, research-backed strategies, not chasing viral trends or impulsive gambles.
