What is an NPS Account?

An NPS (National Pension System) account is a voluntary, long-term retirement savings scheme backed by the Indian government. Think of it like a specialised piggy bank for your golden years. While you work, you regularly deposit money into it. However, instead of just sitting there, your funds are actively invested across a mix of stocks, corporate bonds, and government securities to grow over the decades. Upon retirement, you take out a portion as a lump sum and use the rest to receive a regular monthly pension.

For everyday investors, an NPS account is a powerful dual-purpose tool. It enforces disciplined, locked-in saving for retirement while providing significant tax benefits right now. This allows you to steadily build a massive long-term nest egg while legally lowering your taxable income today.
