How One Waste Company Makes Money 3 Different Ways
Back to Basics
Terms that put you one step ahead – every day
What is the Difference Between a Shareholder and Debenture Holder?
A shareholder owns a piece of a company, while a debenture holder simply lends money to it. Think of buying a house. If you and a friend pool your money to buy it together, you are co-owners (shareholders), sharing the profits if its value rises, but taking a hit if it drops. If a bank lends you money for the mortgage, they are a debenture holder. They get fixed interest payments regardless of the house’s value, but they don’t own the property.
In the stock market, companies issue both shares (equity) and debentures (debt) to raise capital. For everyday investors, this dictates your risk and reward. Shareholders enjoy voting rights and unlimited upside, but lose everything if the company goes bankrupt. Debenture holders get fixed, priority payouts, but miss out on massive growth.
