What are the stock market timings in India?
Stock market timings in the Indian stock market (NSE and BSE) are structured into distinct sessions based on whether you are trading in the capital market (cash/equity) or the derivatives market (futures and options).
1. Capital market (equity / cash segment):
The capital market operates from Monday to Friday, excluding exchange holidays and weekends.
- Pre-open session (9:00 AM – 9:15 AM):
- 9:00 AM – 9:05 AM: Order entry, modification and cancellation permitted for both limit and market order
- 9:05 AM – 9:10 AM: Order entry, modification, and cancellation permitted only for limit orders
- 9:10 AM – 9:12 AM: Order matching and opening price determination
- 9:12 AM – 9:15 AM: System buffer period transitioning into the normal trading session
- Continuous trading session:
- Non-F&O-backed stocks (non-CAS): 9:15 AM – 3:30 PM.
- F&O-backed stocks (CAS-eligible): 9:15 AM – 3:15 PM.
- Closing auction session (CAS) (3:15 PM – 3:35 PM):
- Applies only to cash stocks on which F&O contracts are traded.
- 3:15 PM – 3:20 PM: System transition and reference price calculation.
- 3:20 PM – 3:30 PM: Auction order collection window.
- 3:30 PM – 3:35 PM: Order matching and final closing price calculation.
- Post-closing session (3:40 PM – 4:00 PM):
- Trading takes place strictly at the finalized closing price.
2. Derivatives market (F&O):
- Continuous trading session:
- Equity derivatives (index and stock F&O): 9:15 AM – 3:40 PM.
Note: You can’t place any order during these time slots: 9:08 AM to 9:15 AM, 3:20 PM to 3:25 PM, and 3:30 PM to 3:35 PM.
