What causes F&O contracts to enter a ban period?

The F&O contracts of stock are banned once the open interest of any stock crosses 95% of the market-wide position limits (MWPL). During the ban period, new positions for stock F&O contracts are prohibited. However, exiting existing positions is permitted. The stock is still able to be traded in the cash segment without any restrictions.
