What is Confirmation Bias?

Confirmation Bias refers to a cognitive blind spot where individuals actively seek out or overvalue information that supports their existing beliefs while ignoring contradictory evidence. In the stock market, this occurs when an investor becomes convinced a specific stock is a guaranteed winner and only reads bullish reports, completely dismissing clear warning signs like poor earnings or industry headwinds.

This psychological trap creates a distorted view of risk, often causing individuals to hold onto losing positions for too long or double down on bad bets. For investors, overcoming confirmation bias is essential; it serves as a reminder to actively challenge your own assumptions, seek out opposing viewpoints, and objectively analyse facts to make well-rounded, rational investment decisions.
