What is Range Formation?
Range formation is when a stock’s price moves sideways, bouncing between a set high (resistance) and low (support) level for an extended period. During this phase, the market doesn’t trend up or down, it just stays stuck in a predictable channel. Buyers step in at the support level, pushing prices up, while sellers act at resistance to pull prices down. Range formations often reflect indecision or a pause in market momentum as traders wait for new developments. For you, these periods can offer regular trading opportunities, buying near support and selling near resistance, while also serving as a warning not to expect big moves until the price breaks out of the range. Recognising a range helps you avoid chasing trades when the market is just stuck in neutral.
