What is an Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS)?
ELSS is a type of mutual fund that invests primarily in equities while offering tax benefits under Section 80C. It comes with a mandatory three-year lock-in, which is the shortest among tax-saving options linked to the market. Because the money is invested in the stock market, returns can be volatile in the short term but may beat traditional fixed-income products over the long run.
You can treat ELSS as a way to combine tax planning with long-term wealth creation. Stagger investments through SIPs to smooth out market ups and downs and make the most of the power of compounding.
