What is Stagflation?

Stagflation is an economic condition that occurs when slow economic growth and high unemployment happen simultaneously with rising prices (inflation). Simply put, it describes a “worst of both worlds” scenario where the cost of living goes up, but the economy isn’t growing enough to support it.

This situation is particularly dangerous because it leaves policymakers in a bind; typical tools used to lower inflation, like raising interest rates, can accidentally crush growth further. You should view stagflation as a red flag for your portfolio, as it tends to erode purchasing power and typically leads to poor returns across both stocks and bonds.
