What’s Happening Beyond Markets?

  • The Centre may save up to ₹75,000 crore this fiscal year as ministries like Jal Shakti and Rural Development leave funds unutilised. These savings are expected to help the government strictly meet its FY26 fiscal deficit target of 4.4%, balancing out other revenue shortfalls.
  • The HSBC India Manufacturing PMI climbed to 56.8 in January 2026, the strongest reading in three months. Preliminary estimates show factory output and new orders expanded rapidly due to robust demand. Consequently, firms stepped up hiring and increased material purchases despite a rise in input costs.
  • India’s service sector activity accelerated in January 2026, with the HSBC Services PMI rising to 59.3. According to preliminary data, the upturn was driven by a surge in new orders and strong foreign demand from regions like Asia and Europe. However, firms raised prices to offset sharper input cost pressures.
  • The HSBC India Composite PMI rebounded to 59.5 in January 2026, recovering from December’s 11-month low. Flash data indicates broad-based growth across manufacturing and services, supported by aggressive marketing and efficiency gains. Business sentiment hit a three-month high, prompting a resumption in hiring activities.
  • Elon Musk, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, predicted that AI will surpass the collective intelligence of all humanity within five years. Musk told BlackRock CEO Larry Fink that “super-human” intelligence is imminent, with AI likely outsmarting individual humans by next year.

What is an Operating Cash Flow?

Operating Cash Flow (OCF) measures the amount of cash generated by a company’s normal business operations. It indicates whether a company can generate sufficient positive cash flow to maintain and grow its operations without relying on external financing. Simply put, it’s the cash generated from the company’s actual activities. OCF looks strictly at cash coming in from sales versus cash going out for expenses, ignoring one-time events such as the sale of a factory.

For investors, OCF is a reality check. “Profit” can sometimes be an opinion based on accounting rules, but cash is a fact. OCF reveals the true health of the core business, ensuring the company isn’t just profitable on paper while bleeding cash in reality.
