What is an Operating Margin?
Operating Margin measures the profit a company makes on every rupee of sales after paying for variable costs like production and wages, but before paying interest or taxes. It indicates how efficiently a company manages its day-to-day expenses.
Operating Margin looks strictly at operational efficiency, ignoring financial engineering or tax benefits. For investors, Operating Margin is a reflection of competitive power. A high margin suggests the company has strong pricing power or excellent cost control, providing a crucial safety buffer against tough economic times that paper-thin margins just can’t offer.
