Here’s a quick wrap-up where we break down the performance of key indices, top corporate movers, and the major economic headlines of the day.

Extending their losing streak to the fourth consecutive day, Nifty 50 and Sensex ended a volatile first trading session of June nearly 1% lower. The slump was driven by aggressive FII offloading worth ₹21,105.86 crore on May 29, a ~2% spike in Brent crude to around $94 per barrel, and geopolitical tensions as US President Donald Trump withheld approval for a 60-day ceasefire with Iran. On the sectoral front, most indices ended in the red, with Nifty Realty emerging as the top loser and Nifty IT as the top leader.

What is Leverage in the Stock Market?

In the stock market, leverage means using borrowed money to invest, aiming to multiply your potential profits. Think of buying a $500,000 house with just a $50,000 down payment. You are using a small amount of your own cash to control a much larger asset.

In investing, you typically do this through a “margin account,” borrowing cash directly from your broker to buy more shares than you could normally afford. Companies also use leverage by taking on corporate debt to fund their expansion. For everyday investors, it’s crucial to remember that leverage is a double-edged sword. While it can supersize your gains if a stock’s price goes up, it equally magnifies your losses if the price drops, meaning you could potentially lose more money than your original investment.
