What is Availability Bias?
Availability Bias is a mental shortcut where investors judge the likelihood of an event based on how easily examples come to mind. If you’ve recently seen headlines about a “market crash” or a “tech boom,” your brain trickles into believing those outcomes are more probable than they actually are.
In the stock market, this often leads to trend-chasing. Investors might pour money into a sector simply because it’s dominating the news cycle, or panic-sell during a minor dip because a recent recession is still fresh in their memory. By overvaluing “loud” or recent information, we often ignore long-term data and cold, hard statistics. Overcoming this bias requires stepping back from the noise and focusing on a broad set of facts rather than just the most memorable ones.
