What are Weighted Average Shares?
In corporate finance, “weighted average shares” is a calculation that accounts for changes in a company’s total number of outstanding shares over a specific period. Think of it like splitting profits at a startup. If you start the year with 10 equal partners, but bring in 2 more exactly halfway through, dividing the year’s total profits by 12 wouldn’t be fair to the founders. You’d calculate an average based on how long those new partners were actually there (effectively 11 shares for the year).
Public companies constantly issue new stock or buy back existing shares. For everyday investors, this number is vital. It’s the exact figure used to calculate Earnings Per Share (EPS). By weighting shares based on time, investors get an accurate, unskewed picture of a company’s true profitability per share.
