What are Pledged Shares?
Pledged shares represent stock that company founders, or promoters, use as collateral to secure loans from financial institutions. Much like securing a mortgage on a property, promoters pledge their ownership stakes to raise capital for business expansion or to meet personal financial obligations.
Investors monitor these pledging levels closely as a metric of potential risk. If the company’s stock price declines significantly, the value of the pledged collateral naturally diminishes. Under these circumstances, lenders may issue a margin call, requiring promoters to provide additional capital or collateral.
If the promoters cannot meet this demand, the lender holds the right to liquidate the pledged shares on the open market to recover their funds. This sudden influx of market supply can trigger a severe decline in the stock’s price, adversely impacting the portfolios of all shareholders.
