What is Tax Deducted at Source (TDS)?

Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) refers to a taxation mechanism where tax is collected directly at the origin of income generation. Under this system, the entity making a payment, such as a company distributing dividends or a bank paying interest, deducts a statutory percentage of tax before remitting the balance to the recipient.

This framework ensures a continuous revenue stream for the government while effectively curbing tax evasion. For investors, TDS serves as a form of advance tax payment, which can later be adjusted against their final overall tax liability during the annual return filing process.
