What is Real GDP?

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total monetary value of all finished goods and services produced within a country’s borders. Real GDP is this value adjusted for inflation.

Why does it matter? If you look at “Nominal GDP,” growth might look high just because prices have gone up (inflation), even if the country didn’t produce any more goods. Real GDP strips out those price hikes to show the true growth in production volume. When today’s headlines say India grew at 8.2%, they are referring to Real GDP, indicating that the economy is expanding because of actual increased activity, not just due to an expensive price tag.
