Tata Motors Total Sales Down 9% Amid Mixed Segment Trends

Tata Motors Ltd. reported total domestic wholesales of 70,187 units in May 2025, registering a 9% year-on-year decline. Passenger vehicle (PV) sales stood at 41,557 units, slightly down from 46,697 in the same month last year. Within PVs, electric vehicle (EV) sales rose to 5,685 units from 5,558 a year ago, up 9%. In the commercial vehicle (CV) segment, total sales dropped 5% YoY to 28,147 units. While overall volumes were slightly subdued, the company noted stable retail trends and continued investments in new product launches.

Hero MotoCorp Shows Strong Retail Demand and EV Momentum

Hero MotoCorp Ltd., , the world’s largest two-wheeler maker, dispatched 5.08 lakh motorcycles and scooters during May 2025, marking both sequential and annual growth. The company also clocked over 5 lakh VAHAN registrations, excluding Telangana, signaling robust retail demand. Hero’s recent launches across the motorcycle and scooter categories were well-received, contributing to increased market share. In electric vehicles, the VIDA V2 range posted dispatches of 8,361 units and VAHAN registrations of 7,161 units, a 7.2% market share in the e-scooter space. VIDA also announced a new product launch set for July 1. Internationally, Hero continued to see traction in markets like Bangladesh and Colombia, while exports remained stable with a positive outlook.

Bajaj Auto’s Export Surge Lifts Overall Sales

Bajaj Auto Ltd. reported total sales of 3,84,621 units in May 2025, up 8% YoY. Domestic two-wheeler sales jumped 2% to 1,91,412 units, and exports jumped 20% to 1,40,958 units. In the commercial vehicle (CV) segment, Bajaj clocked sales of 52,251 units, up 5% YoY. 

Hyundai May Volumes Affected by Plant Shutdown

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. posted 58,701 units in total sales, including 43,861 units domestically and 14,840 units exported. The company’s biannual plant maintenance shutdown in Chennai impacted the availability of some key models during the month. Despite this, Hyundai continued to see consistent momentum in its export business, with leadership noting optimism for both domestic and international demand in the coming months as macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions improve.

Maruti Suzuki’s Compact Cars Lead, Utility Vehicles Hold Strong

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. reported total sales of 1,80,077 units in May 2025, including domestic sales of 1,38,690 units, 10,168 units sold to other OEMs, and exports of 31,219 units. While the compact segment (including Baleno, Swift, and WagonR) continued to lead with 61,502 units, sales of entry-level mini cars like Alto and S-Presso remained muted at 6,776 units. The utility vehicle portfolio, which includes models like Brezza, Ertiga, and Grand Vitara, maintained strong traction with 54,899 units sold. The company also dispatched 2,728 Super Carry LCVs and 12,327 Eeco vans in the month. Overall, Maruti’s performance showed healthy YoY growth, particularly in exports and utility vehicles, reflecting sustained demand across key segments.
