India’s auto industry witnessed mixed performance in July 2025, with growth in utility vehicles and exports balancing out softness in passenger cars and two-wheelers.
Mahindra & Mahindra Rides on SUV Momentum and Three-Wheelers
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. posted a 26% year-on-year increase in total sales to 83,691 units, backed by strong SUV performance and surging three-wheeler volumes. Domestic SUV sales grew 20% YoY to 49,871 units, aided by the launch of the new XUV 3XO ‘REVX’ Series and fresh deliveries for upcoming EV models like the XUV 9E and BE 6.
In the commercial vehicle space, LCVs in the 2–3.5T category rose 12%, while three-wheeler sales soared 164% YoY to 9,475 units, indicating demand recovery in the last-mile mobility segment. Total exports grew 83% to 2,774 units, marking strong international traction.
Maruti Suzuki Posts Steady Volumes; Exports Stay Strong
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. reported total sales of 1,80,526 units in July, up from 1,75,041 units a year ago. While domestic PV and LCV sales were flat at 1,40,570 units, exports surged 33% YoY to 31,745 units.
The compact segment remained the volume driver with 65,667 units. Utility vehicle sales, including the Brezza, Fronx, and Grand Vitara, came in at 52,773 units, maintaining momentum despite rising competition. Sales to other OEMs stood at 8,211 units.
Tata Motors Faces PV Weakness, But CV and EV Segments Show Promise
Tata Motors Ltd. recorded total sales of 69,131 units, down 4% YoY, as a decline in passenger vehicle sales offset gains in commercial vehicles and EVs. PV sales fell 11% YoY to 40,175 units, impacted by high base effect and soft rural demand. However, EV sales hit a record high of 7,124 units, up 42% YoY, as the company continues to lead the domestic EV market.
Commercial vehicles performed better with a 7% growth to 28,956 units, led by ILMCV trucks (up 17%) and a strong 57% increase in international business. Tata also saw 4% growth in domestic CV sales.
Hyundai Records Highest-Ever SUV Share in Domestic Sales
Hyundai Motor India Ltd. posted total sales of 60,073 units in July, including 43,973 units in domestic sales and 16,100 units in exports. SUVs made up 71.8% of domestic volumes, the highest ever for the automaker. The CRETA continued its strong showing, marking a decade of market leadership with cumulative sales crossing 1.2 million units.
The brand is also expanding manufacturing capacity with its upcoming Talegaon plant to meet rising demand.
Bajaj Auto: Strong Export Performance Offsets Domestic Weakness
Bajaj Auto Ltd. reported total sales of 3,66,000 units, up 3% YoY, led by a 28% jump in exports to 1,82,857 units. Domestic sales declined 13% YoY to 1,83,143 units, largely due to an 18% drop in two-wheeler volumes.
The commercial vehicle segment offered a bright spot with 23% growth to 69,753 units, including a 79% YoY rise in CV exports. Bajaj continues to leverage strong international demand and a diversified portfolio to stabilize overall sales performance.
