Adani Power Ltd., India’s largest private sector thermal power generator, has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. (BSPGCL) for the long-term procurement of electricity. The company will establish a 2,400 MW (3×800 MW) greenfield ultra-supercritical thermal power project at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district, Bihar, under a 25-year Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the state distribution utilities.
The LoA was issued by BSPGCL on behalf of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SBPDCL).
Project Scale and Investment
Adani Power will invest approximately $3 billion (₹25,000 crore) in setting up the Pirpainti project and related infrastructure. The project is expected to generate 10,000–12,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 3,000 jobs once operational.
The company was awarded the LoA after emerging as the lowest bidder in a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process conducted by BSPGCL, offering a supply price of ₹6.075 per kWh.
Supporting Bihar’s Power Demand
The project is expected to provide reliable and affordable electricity to Bihar, supporting both households and industries. By adding large-scale base-load capacity, it will strengthen the state’s energy security and aid its industrial and economic development.
Broader Energy Context
India’s peak power demand, currently around 250 GW, is projected to rise to 400 GW by 2031–32 and cross 700 GW by 2047, driven by urbanisation, industrialisation, and population growth. To meet this rising requirement, the government has targeted an additional 100 GW of thermal capacity by 2035.
Thermal power, with its ability to provide a dependable, round-the-clock supply, is expected to remain central to balancing India’s energy mix alongside renewable growth. The Pirpainti project aligns with this strategy, ensuring grid stability and meeting base-load requirements.
Adani Power’s Position
Adani Power currently operates 18,110 MW of thermal power capacity across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu, along with a 40 MW solar project in Gujarat. With the addition of the Pirpainti plant, the company will further consolidate its position as the country’s largest private power producer.
