What is Self-Serving Bias?
Self-serving bias is our ego’s favourite defence mechanism in the stock market. It’s the psychological habit of taking full credit when your trades win, but blaming the universe when they lose. In the stock market, this looks like buying a stock that shoots up 20% and patting yourself on the back for your brilliant fundamental analysis. But when that hot tip on a stock crashes, you suddenly blame “market operators,” a surprise RBI rate hike, or bad global cues, conveniently ignoring your own lack of research.
We confuse a lucky break with pure skill, and bad choices with bad luck. To beat this illusion, you must own your trading mistakes just as much as your multi-baggers, because blaming the market will never make you a better investor.
