What does it mean when trading is halted for a stock?

Sometimes, trading for a particular stock (scrip) may be temporarily halted on one or both stock exchanges (NSE or BSE). This can happen due to regulatory actions, operational issues, corporate announcements, or temporary restrictions placed by the exchange to maintain orderly trading.

Here’s what it means in different situations:

1. If trading is halted on BSE only:

  • You cannot buy or sell the stock on BSE during this time.
  • The same stock may still be available for trading on NSE.
  • You can choose to continue trading by switching to NSE.

2. If trading is halted on NSE only

  • You won’t be able to buy or sell the stock on NSE.
  • Trading may still be possible on BSE if the stock is active there.

3. If trading is halted on both NSE and BSE:

  • You cannot trade the stock on any exchange until the halt is lifted.
  • All buy and sell for the stock will be blocked or rejected during this period.
  • You will need to wait for the exchanges to resume trading.

Trading halts are generally temporary and are lifted once the underlying issue is resolved by the exchange. You can always check the live status of the stock directly on the Share.Market. You can also check the daily stock ban list for BSE and NSE.
