What is a lot size?
Lot size is the minimum number of shares or units you must buy or sell in one order. It varies depending on what you’re trading.
Lot Sizes by Product Type
Product Type | What it Means | Example |
Equity (Intraday/Delivery) | No lot size. You can buy starting from 1 share. | Buy 1, 10, or 100 shares—your choice. |
IPO | Minimum number of shares you must apply for. You can only apply in multiples. | 1 lot = 50 shares → Apply for 50, 100… |
Futures & Options | Fixed lot size defined by the exchange. You must trade in lots only. | Nifty = 1 lot = 75 units, Reliance = 1 lot = 500 units |
Note: Lot sizes in IPOs and F&O are fixed and vary for each stock or contract. You can check the current lot size on the NSE or BSE website.
