What’s Happening Beyond Markets?

  • India’s foreign currency reserves grew by $2.3 billion to nearly $699 billion, approaching record levels. These reserves can cover 11 months of imports and protect against economic uncertainties.
  • The government has reduced import duties on raw cooking oils to help local oil companies. This makes it cheaper to import raw oils instead of ready-made ones, helping Indian refiners run better and potentially lowering cooking oil prices for consumers.
  • India’s agrochemical market is expected to grow from $11.2 billion today to $14.5 billion by 2028. Despite recent export struggles due to Chinese competition, the sector is recovering with strong domestic demand and cost-effective production methods.
  • Oil prices jumped as much as 2.7% on Monday after the US attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities over the weekend. Oil briefly hit five-month highs as traders worry about Iran’s potential retaliation, which could disrupt global oil supplies through the Middle East.
  • Singapore’s inflation dropped to 0.8% in May 2025, the lowest since early 2021. Food and transport costs rose more slowly, while entertainment and recreation prices fell, showing the economy is cooling down from previous price pressures.
  • The US dollar strengthened after America attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities over the weekend. Markets are nervous about Iran’s potential response, which could disrupt oil supplies. Meanwhile, gold prices fell as investors prefer holding dollars during uncertain times like these.

What Is a Price Return Index?

A Price Return Index (PRI) is a stock market index that measures only the price movements of its constituent stocks, without accounting for any dividends or other income distributions paid by those stocks.

This type of index is useful for tracking the general price trend of the market or a specific sector, but does not represent the total returns an investor would receive if dividends were reinvested.

For example, if a stock’s price increases by 10% but it also pays a 2% dividend, the price return index would only show the 10% price appreciation, ignoring the dividend income.
