Highlights

Indian equity markets saw a sharp decline as both the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex closed over 1% lower. The selloff was triggered by a mix of global uncertainties, including rising oil prices, escalating US-Iran tensions, and caution ahead of key US-China trade developments. All sectors ended in the red, except the Nifty Healthcare Index.

What’s Happening Beyond Our Markets?
  • Centre slashes import duty on crude edible oils from 20% to 10% to lower retail prices, curb inflation, and boost domestic refining.
  • China’s export curbs on rare-earth magnets may hit auto production by mid-July, says ICRA. Inventory is depleting fast, and finding alternative supply chains is proving difficult.
  • The US budget deficit narrowed 9% to $316B in May 2025, helped by record $23B customs receipts from Trump’s new tariffs. Interest payments on debt also fell for the first time since October.
  • UK GDP shrank 0.3% in April 2025, its first drop in six months, hit by higher costs, Trump tariffs, and weak services. But GDP still grew 0.7% in the 3 months.

What Is CRR?

CRR (Cash Reserve Ratio) is like a mandatory piggy bank for banks.

It’s the portion of total deposits that banks must keep with the RBI in cash, no lending, no investing.

Let’s say the CRR is 3%.

If you deposit ₹100 in your bank, your bank must send ₹3 straight to the RBI. The bank can only use the remaining ₹97 to give loans or invest.

Why Does the RBI Do This?

  • To Control Liquidity
  • To Fight Inflation
  • To Keep Banks Safe

CRR is the RBI’s way of making sure banks stay liquid and the economy doesn’t overheat.

It’s one of the key levers to balance growth and stability.
