Back to Basics
What is Repo Rate?
The repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends short-term funds to commercial banks. It’s India’s key monetary policy tool.
When RBI cuts the repo rate, banks’ borrowing costs fall. If banks pass this on, loan interest rates (like home or car loans) linked to external benchmarks can decrease. But it’s not automatic — it depends on liquidity, bank policies, and market conditions.
Conversely, when RBI hikes rates, borrowing becomes expensive to control inflation.
For investors, repo rate changes influence:
- EMIs and deposit rates
- Market sentiment
- Growth and inflation dynamics
It’s the heartbeat of India’s financial system.
