India & The World
- RBI simplified foreign exchange rules by capping penalties at ₹2 lakh for issues like delayed export payments, sending money abroad, or gifting high-value shares, replacing the earlier percentage-based fines.
- China is considering exempting some U.S. goods, like medical equipment and chemicals, from its 125% tariffs to ease trade war pressures.
- US 10-year Treasury yield held at 4.31% as trade tensions eased with ongoing China talks and possible tariff waivers. Hints of a Fed rate cut by June also supported market sentiment.
Back to Basics
What is Currency Depreciation?
When the rupee depreciates, it loses value against foreign currencies like the U.S. dollar.
Example: If ₹75 = $1 last year, but ₹83 = $1 today, the rupee has weakened.
Impact?
- Imports cost more (fuel, gold, electronics)
- Overseas travel and education get pricier
- Inflation pressure rises
- Positive for IT and pharma exporters because they will get a higher amount of rupees per U.S. dollar.
In short, the weaker rupee is a mixed bag, benefiting exporters, but adding pressure on sectors reliant on imports.
