India & The World
  • RBI simplified foreign exchange rules by capping penalties at ₹2 lakh for issues like delayed export payments, sending money abroad, or gifting high-value shares, replacing the earlier percentage-based fines.
  • China is considering exempting some U.S. goods, like medical equipment and chemicals, from its 125% tariffs to ease trade war pressures.
  • US 10-year Treasury yield held at 4.31% as trade tensions eased with ongoing China talks and possible tariff waivers. Hints of a Fed rate cut by June also supported market sentiment.

What is Currency Depreciation?

When the rupee depreciates, it loses value against foreign currencies like the U.S. dollar.

Example: If ₹75 = $1 last year, but ₹83 = $1 today,  the rupee has weakened.

Impact?

  • Imports cost more (fuel, gold, electronics)
  • Overseas travel and education get pricier
  • Inflation pressure rises
  • Positive for IT and pharma exporters because they will get a higher amount of rupees per U.S. dollar.

In short, the weaker rupee is a mixed bag, benefiting exporters, but adding pressure on sectors reliant on imports.
