India & The World
- India inaugurated its first deepwater transhipment port, Vizhinjam, built for ₹8,867 crore under a PPP model with Adani Ports. The port aims to cut foreign dependency by handling large cargo ships and redirecting transhipment from ports like Colombo and Singapore.
- India’s factory activity hit a 10-month high in April, with the manufacturing PMI rising to 58.2. Strong domestic and overseas demand drove new orders, job creation, and selling prices.
- India, in talks with the EU, stressed that addressing non-tariff barriers is as vital as lowering import duties for a balanced free trade agreement. Both sides aim to conclude the FTA by end-2025, with monthly negotiations to continue and the next round set for May 12–16.
Back to Basics
What is the Current Account Deficit?
The current account tracks a country’s trade in goods and services, income from abroad, and transfers like remittances. When we import more than we export, we run a current account deficit.
A higher deficit means:
- More dollars are going out than coming in
- Pressure on the rupee and forex reserves
For India, a rising deficit can make the economy more vulnerable to global shocks and impact investor confidence.
