What is Operating Margin?
When companies post quarterly results, you often hear about operating margin. But what does it really tell you?
Operating margin = (Operating Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Operating profit is what’s left after subtracting day-to-day running costs (like salaries and rent) from revenue, but before interest and taxes.
A higher operating margin means a company is efficient at turning revenue into profit, showing strong cost control and business operations.
For example, if a company earns ₹100 in revenue and keeps ₹20 after operating costs, the margin is 20%.
Operating margin is one of the sharpest tools to spot a company’s profitability engine. Just remember, it’s most useful when comparing companies in the same industry.
