• India urged the World Trade Organization to cut non-tariff barriers, uphold special treatment for developing nations, and reject the investment facilitation pact while pushing for fair rules, dispute reform, and agri-fisheries clarity.
• Russia’s private sector activity returned to growth in May, with the Composite PMI rising to 51.4. Services led the rebound, while manufacturing lagged. Job cuts and weak confidence, however, remain concerns.
• Vietnam posted a record $4.67B trade surplus in May, driven by an export rush ahead of looming US tariffs. Exports surged 14% YoY, but U.S. demands may strain future trade ties.
• U.S. light vehicle sales slumped to 15.65M units in May, missing forecasts and marking the sharpest drop since April 2020 amid tariff fears and post-March pre-buying slowdown.

What Are Non-Tariff Barriers?

Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) are trade restrictions that don’t involve taxes. Think of them as hidden speed bumps, rules that slow or block imports even if duties are paid.

Imagine you’re trying to enter a club:

Tariffs are like the entry fee at the door. NTBs are all the extra checks, like dress code, ID checks, or a guest list, that could stop you even if you paid the fee.

Common Types of NTBs:

• Import licenses: Special permission is needed to bring certain goods in.
• Strict quality checks & standards: Goods must meet specific rules for safety, packaging, or labelling.
• Quotas: Limits on how much of a product can be imported.
• Bureaucratic delays: Extra paperwork or slow customs clearance

For Indian exporters, NTBs in other countries can delay or reject shipments. For us consumers, it means higher prices or limited choices. 

For the economy, it’s a reminder, trade isn’t just about tariffs. It’s about what’s buried in the fine print.
