Back to Basics

Trade Deficit

A trade deficit happens when a country imports more than it exports, meaning it buys more from the world than it sells.

For India, this often happens because we import a lot of crude oil, electronics, and gold. A rising trade deficit can put pressure on the rupee, impact inflation, and signal rising global dependency.

But it’s not always bad, sometimes it reflects strong domestic demand.

The key? Watch what we’re importing and whether exports are growing fast enough to balance it.

A healthy trade mix supports a stable currency and a stronger economy.
