What’s Happening Beyond Markets?
  • According to ICRA, India’s diamond industry faces tough times. Exports dropped 17% last year to $13.3 billion, a 20-year low. Another 7-10% decline expected next year due to weak demand and cheaper lab-grown diamonds.
  • India imposes 27-63% anti-dumping duties on plastic machinery from China and Taiwan for five years. The government found that these machines were sold below fair prices, hurting local manufacturers. Duties protect the domestic plastic equipment industry.
  • India-U.S. trade talks stalled over disputes on import duties for auto parts, steel, and farm products. Deal unlikely before President Trump’s July 9 tariff deadline. Both countries want different concessions.
  • China’s current account surplus hit a record $165.4 billion in Q1 2025, triple the previous year’s $47.2 billion. The export boom driven by weak domestic demand pushed companies to sell more abroad. Goods surplus nearly doubled.
  • Gold fell to $3,280 per ounce, its lowest in four weeks, as the US-China trade deal reduced safe-haven demand. Countries agreed to ease trade restrictions and lift export controls. Investors await inflation data for Fed rate guidance.
  • S&P downgraded Colombia’s debt rating to BB from BB+ due to weak finances. Moody’s also cut the rating to Baa3. Both agencies cite high deficits and rising debt, expected to hit 64% of GDP by 2027.

What Is Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR)?

Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) shows how well a bank can withstand financial shocks, such as bad loans or economic crises.

It measures the bank’s capital compared to its risk-weighted assets (like loans and investments, each with different risk levels).

A CAR above India’s regulatory minimum of 9%-12% means the bank meets the rules and has a strong safety buffer for tough times.

Why is this important?

Because when you deposit your money, you want it to be secure. A higher CAR means the bank can absorb losses and keep running smoothly, even during financial stress.
